When Does Skincare Expire? How to Know When to Toss Your Products

Do Skincare Products Actually Expire?

Yes—and using expired products can do more harm than good. Active ingredients degrade over time, reducing efficacy. In some cases, expired products can harbor bacteria or cause irritation.

Understanding product shelf life helps you get the most from your routine and avoid wasting money on products that are no longer working.

The PAO Symbol: Your Expiration Guide

Most skincare products use the Period After Opening (PAO) symbol—a small open jar icon on the packaging with a number and "M" (for months). This tells you how long the product is safe and effective to use after you first open it.

Common PAO periods:
- SPF: 12M (12 months after opening)
- Vitamin C serum: 3–6M (oxidizes quickly)
- Retinol: 6–12M
- Moisturizer: 12M
- Eye cream: 6–12M
- Cleanser: 12M

Signs a Product Has Gone Bad

  • Color change (especially vitamin C turning orange/brown — strong sign of oxidation)
  • Texture change (separated, grainy, or unusually thick/thin)
  • Unusual smell (rancid, sour, or off from original scent)
  • Visible mold or contamination

How to Make Skincare Last Longer

Store Products Properly

  • Keep products away from heat, humidity, and direct light
  • Bathroom cabinets near the shower are not ideal — the steam and temperature fluctuations degrade products faster
  • Many vitamin C serums and retinol products benefit from refrigeration

Use Clean Hands and Applicators

Introducing bacteria into a product via dirty fingers accelerates degradation and contamination. Use a clean spatula or wash hands before dipping into jar formulas.

Choose Pumps Over Jars

Pump or tube packaging limits air exposure, extending shelf life for oxidation-sensitive ingredients like vitamin C and retinoids.

What to Toss Immediately

  • Any SPF past its expiration date — compromised sun protection is a health risk
  • Vitamin C that has turned orange or brown
  • Any product with an unusual smell or visible mold
  • Retinol that has significantly changed color or texture

When in doubt, throw it out. An expired product that isn't working is worse than using nothing at all.
