Toner is a liquid skincare product applied after cleansing and before serums. Once synonymous with astringent, alcohol-heavy formulas designed to strip oil, modern toners have evolved considerably. Today's toners serve a range of functions depending on their formulation.
Also called essences or hydrating mists. These deliver a layer of moisture to prepped skin, helping serums and moisturizers absorb better. Common ingredients: hyaluronic acid, glycerin, aloe vera, panthenol.
Contain AHAs (glycolic or lactic acid) or BHAs (salicylic acid) to dissolve dead skin cells at the surface. These are treatment products, not optional add-ons. Use 2–3 nights per week unless your skin is accustomed to regular exfoliation.
Help restore skin's pH after cleansing and prepare it for subsequent products. Particularly useful after alkaline cleansers.
Toner is not essential for everyone. However, it can add meaningful benefit if:
- Your skin feels tight or dehydrated after cleansing → try a hydrating toner
- You want to improve texture and cell turnover without adding a separate serum → try an exfoliating toner
- You're using a serum with ingredients that work better on properly prepped, slightly damp skin
Apply after cleansing on slightly damp skin. You can use your hands (press gently into skin), a cotton pad, or a spray mist. Follow with serum and moisturizer.
Toner is a supporting player in your routine, not the star. Choose one that addresses a specific concern and it can meaningfully improve your results.
