How to Treat Rosacea: Symptoms, Triggers, and the Best Treatment Options
April 2026
If you could only do one thing for your skin, it would be wearing sunscreen every day. UV radiation is the leading cause of:
- Premature aging (wrinkles, fine lines, sagging)
- Hyperpigmentation and dark spots
- Skin cancer (the most common cancer in the United States)
No serum, no treatment, no vitamin can undo the damage caused by consistent UV exposure. SPF prevents the damage from happening in the first place.
The difference between SPF 30 and SPF 50 is smaller than most people think. What matters more than SPF number is consistent, correct application and reapplication.
UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and cause aging and pigmentation. UVB rays cause sunburn. You need protection from both.
Always look for "broad spectrum" on the label — this indicates protection from both UVA and UVB.
Mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) sit on top of the skin and physically deflect UV rays. They work immediately upon application and are generally better tolerated by sensitive skin.
Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays and convert them to heat. They tend to feel lighter on the skin and blend more easily. Apply 15–20 minutes before sun exposure to allow absorption.
Many sunscreens combine both for balanced protection.
"I don't need SPF on cloudy days."
Up to 80% of UV rays penetrate clouds. Wear SPF daily regardless of weather.
"My foundation has SPF — that's enough."
Cosmetic SPF is applied too thinly to provide adequate protection. Wear dedicated sunscreen underneath.
"SPF causes breakouts."
Modern non-comedogenic formulas are designed for acne-prone skin. The right formula exists for every skin type.
The best sunscreen is the one you'll actually wear every day. Find one you love and make it non-negotiable.
