Skincare for Dry Skin: The Complete Guide

Skincare for Dry Skin: The Complete Guide

Understanding Dry Skin

Dry skin (also called xerosis) occurs when the skin doesn't retain enough moisture. This can be due to genetics, environmental factors, aging, or lifestyle habits. The result is skin that feels tight, rough, and may flake or crack.

Unlike dehydrated skin (which is a temporary condition caused by lack of water), dry skin is a skin type—meaning it produces less oil than normal or oily skin types.

Signs You Have Dry Skin

  • Tightness after cleansing
  • Flakiness or rough texture
  • Dull, ashy complexion
  • Fine lines more visible than usual
  • Itching or irritation

Building a Skincare Routine for Dry Skin

Cleanser

Use a cream or oil-based cleanser that doesn't strip the skin. Avoid foaming or gel cleansers with sulfates, which can disrupt the skin barrier.

Toner

Skip alcohol-based toners entirely. Choose hydrating toners with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or aloe vera.

Serum

Hyaluronic acid is a must for dry skin — it draws moisture from the environment and holds it in the skin. Layer multiple hyaluronic acid products if needed (essence, serum, toner).

Moisturizer

Use a rich, occlusive moisturizer morning and night. Look for:
- Ceramides — rebuild the skin barrier
- Shea butter — deeply emollient
- Squalane — lightweight but highly moisturizing
- Glycerin — humectant that draws moisture in

SPF

Even dry skin needs SPF. Choose mineral sunscreens with hydrating bases (zinc oxide + moisturizing ingredients).

Lifestyle Tips for Dry Skin

  • Use a humidifier, especially in winter
  • Limit hot showers — lukewarm water is gentler
  • Pat (don't rub) skin dry with a towel
  • Apply moisturizer immediately after cleansing while skin is still slightly damp
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day

When to See a Provider

If your dry skin is accompanied by redness, persistent itching, cracking, or bleeding, consult a healthcare provider. Conditions like eczema or psoriasis may require prescription treatment.

A Skin Clique skincare consultation can help identify the underlying cause of your dryness and build a personalized routine to restore your barrier.
