What Is Microneedling? Everything You Need to Know

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling (also called collagen induction therapy) is a minimally invasive cosmetic treatment that uses fine needles to create thousands of micro-channels in the skin's surface. These controlled micro-injuries trigger the body's natural wound healing response—stimulating collagen and elastin production and accelerating cell renewal.

The result: smoother texture, reduced scarring, improved skin tone, and a visible overall rejuvenation.

What Does Microneedling Treat?

Microneedling is one of the most versatile treatments in aesthetic medicine. It's effective for:

  • Acne scars — especially atrophic (indented) scars
  • Fine lines and wrinkles — through collagen stimulation
  • Enlarged pores — tightened through improved skin structure
  • Skin texture — smoother, more refined surface
  • Hyperpigmentation — improved tone and brightness
  • Stretch marks — when combined with advanced serums
  • Overall radiance — the "glow" effect from accelerated cell renewal

How Does It Work?

A microneedling device (often a motorized pen-shaped tool with a sterile needle tip) is moved across the skin, creating controlled punctures at precise depths. These micro-channels:

  1. Trigger the wound healing cascade (growth factors are released)
  2. Stimulate fibroblasts to produce new collagen and elastin
  3. Allow topical serums to penetrate much deeper than topical application alone

Skin Clique providers use FDA-cleared devices with sterile, single-use needle cartridges.

Does It Hurt?

A topical numbing cream is applied before the treatment to minimize discomfort. Most patients describe a mild scratching or vibrating sensation. Deeper settings or bony areas (forehead, temples) may be slightly more intense, but overall the treatment is very well tolerated.

What Is Recovery Like?

Immediately after: redness and mild swelling that resembles a sunburn. Most redness fades within 24–48 hours. Makeup can typically be worn by day 3–5.

You'll want to avoid:
- Active ingredients (retinoids, AHAs, vitamin C) for 5–7 days post-treatment
- Direct sun exposure
- Strenuous exercise for 24–48 hours

How Many Sessions Do I Need?

A series of 3–6 treatments spaced 4–6 weeks apart is recommended for significant improvement. Single sessions provide noticeable results, but cumulative collagen building is where the real transformation happens.

Is Microneedling Safe for All Skin Tones?

Yes. Microneedling is one of the few resurfacing treatments that is safe and effective for all Fitzpatrick skin types, including darker skin tones that may not be candidates for laser treatments.
