Post-Microneedling Care: How to Heal Faster and Get Better Results

Post-Microneedling Care: How to Heal Faster and Get Better Results

Your Post-Microneedling Recovery Guide

Microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin to trigger your body's natural healing response. How you care for your skin in the days following treatment directly impacts your results. Here's what to do—and what to avoid.

Immediately After Treatment

You'll likely experience redness, warmth, and mild swelling that looks similar to a sunburn. This is completely normal and usually subsides within 24–48 hours. Your provider will apply a soothing serum or growth factor immediately post-treatment.

Day 1 (Day of Treatment)

  • Do not wash your face for at least 4–6 hours post-treatment
  • Avoid touching your face
  • No makeup
  • No sun exposure — wear a broad-brimmed hat if going outside
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, hot showers, and saunas
  • Sleep on a clean pillowcase, elevated if possible to reduce swelling

Days 2–3

  • Cleanse gently with a mild, non-foaming cleanser using lukewarm water
  • Apply prescribed or provider-recommended serums (hyaluronic acid, growth factors)
  • Continue avoiding makeup, retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, and vitamin C
  • SPF 30+ is mandatory — UV exposure can cause hyperpigmentation on healing skin
  • Some patients experience light peeling or flaking — this is normal; do not pick

Days 4–7

  • Skin may still feel slightly sensitive or dry
  • You can typically reintroduce gentle moisturizers and SPF
  • Hold off on retinoids and exfoliating acids until cleared by your provider (usually 7–10 days)
  • Most patients are comfortable returning to light makeup by day 3–5

What to Avoid Post-Microneedling

  • Retinoids (retinol, tretinoin) — at least 5–7 days
  • AHAs and BHAs (glycolic, lactic, salicylic acid) — at least 5–7 days
  • Vitamin C serums — at least 5 days (too acidic for healing skin)
  • Tanning beds or direct sun without SPF
  • Swimming pools or hot tubs for 24–48 hours

When Will I See Results?

Most patients notice a healthy glow within 1–2 weeks as new skin cells emerge. Collagen remodeling continues for 3–6 months, which is why a series of treatments yields cumulative improvement.

Consistency with post-care is just as important as the treatment itself. Follow your provider's specific recommendations for the best outcome.
