How to Prime Your Skin for a Chemical Peel

How to Prime Your Skin for a Chemical Peel

Why Pre-Peel Prep Matters

Properly preparing your skin before a chemical peel can significantly improve your results and reduce the risk of side effects like hyperpigmentation or uneven peeling. Think of pre-peel prep as priming a canvas before painting.

2–4 Weeks Before Your Peel

Start a retinoid:
Using a retinoid in the weeks leading up to your peel thins the surface layer of dead skin cells, allowing the peel solution to penetrate more evenly and effectively. Ask your provider about prescription tretinoin or an over-the-counter retinol.

Incorporate vitamin C:
Vitamin C helps prevent post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), which can occur after chemical peels—especially in medium to deeper skin tones. Use a stable vitamin C serum in the morning.

Use SPF daily:
Sun protection is non-negotiable before any exfoliating treatment. UV exposure on vulnerable skin can increase the risk of PIH and compromise your results.

1 Week Before Your Peel

  • Stop using retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, and benzoyl peroxide — these can cause over-sensitization
  • Avoid waxing, threading, or any hair removal on the treatment area
  • Do not get any other facial treatments (laser, microneedling, etc.)
  • Keep skin well hydrated

3 Days Before Your Peel

  • Discontinue any prescription topicals unless your provider instructs otherwise
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure
  • Stay hydrated

Day of Your Peel

  • Arrive with a clean, bare face — no makeup, sunscreen, or active ingredients
  • Inform your provider of any medications or supplements you're taking
  • Let your provider know about any recent illness or cold sores (herpes virus can be triggered by chemical peels)

Who Should Avoid Chemical Peels?

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women
  • Those with active cold sores or open wounds
  • Patients who have used Accutane within the past 6–12 months
  • Patients with a history of keloid scarring

Proper preparation leads to better peeling, more even results, and faster healing. Your provider will walk you through a personalized prep protocol at your consultation.
