Post-Tox Treatment Care: What to Do After Your Neuromodulator Appointment

Post-Tox Treatment Care: What to Do After Your Neuromodulator Appointment

After Your Tox Appointment

You've just had Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin—now what? Following post-treatment guidelines helps ensure the best possible results and minimizes the risk of complications.

The First 4 Hours Are Critical

  • Stay upright — do not lie down flat for at least 4 hours
  • Avoid bending over or putting your head below your heart
  • Do not rub, massage, or touch the injected areas
  • Avoid wearing tight headbands, hats, or helmets that press on the treated areas

First 24 Hours

  • Avoid strenuous exercise, which can increase blood flow and potentially spread the product
  • Skip saunas, hot tubs, and steam rooms
  • Avoid alcohol (it can increase bruising and swelling)
  • Do not apply makeup directly over injection sites for at least 12–24 hours

Managing Bruising and Swelling

Some bruising and swelling at the injection sites is completely normal. To minimize:
- Apply a cold compress (not directly on skin — wrap in a cloth) for 10 minutes at a time
- Arnica gel or supplements can help reduce bruising
- Avoid aspirin and NSAIDs unless prescribed

When Will I See Results?

Neuromodulators don't work immediately. Most patients begin to see movement reduction within 3–5 days, with full results visible at 2 weeks. Your provider may schedule a follow-up to assess results and make any adjustments.

How Long Will Results Last?

Tox treatments typically last 3–4 months for first-time patients. With consistent treatments, many patients find they need touch-ups less frequently.

Signs to Watch For

Contact your provider if you experience:
- Significant asymmetry that worsens over time
- Difficulty swallowing or breathing (extremely rare)
- Drooping of the eyelid or brow (ptosis) — can be treated if caught early
- Any signs of allergic reaction
